Turquoise Treasures From Uchizono Gallery

UCHIZONO GALLERY
My forty five year obsession with Native American jewelry  began with a summer in Albuquerque when I was just a child.  On a day trip to Santa Fe, the Indian market in the square showed me a world I never knew existed.   I was fascinated by the turquoise jewelry.

UCHIZONO GALLERY
My Mother bought me my first bracelet that day.
UCHIZONO GALLERY
I was always drawn to the older pieces.  Jewelry made between 1920 - 1930 has so much soul.  The bracelets, rings and necklaces from this period seemed to be inspired by nature.  The lack of precise measurement is part of the beauty.
It reminds me of an impressionist oil painting, with lost and found edges and blurred lines.

UCHIZONO GALLERY
The random greens from the softer turquoise stones as they accepted oil from wearer is so intriguing and inspiring.
I see pure joy when I look at this jewelry.

Uchizono Gallery Is Pleased To Offer Paintings By Saim Caglayan, Founder Of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association

                                                                 SAIM CAGLAYAN
UCHIZONO GALLERY
Saim Caglayan was born in Istabul, Turkey and came to the United States in 1968.  Saim has been plein air painting the landscapes of the California desert, coastline and Islands of Hawaii for many years now.
In 1966 he founded LPAPA, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.  His goal was to revive the tradition of the early California painters who had lived and painted in Laguna Beach.  Today LPAPA has become a vibrant force in the art community of California with an impressive membership from Hawaii to Florida.

UCHIZONO GALLERY
Anza Borrego is a favorite destination for many plein air painters and Saim spends time each year there painting on location.  Saim carries on the traditional plein air California impressionist style.  He is a dedicated painter.
Fish Creek is a favorite spot to paint and camp.  The lavender sky contrasts with the muddy orange smoke tree and gives the viewer a timeless feeling.  The painting also carries some of the desert with it, there is a fine dusting of sand mingling with the oil paint.  Proving it was truly painted in the plein air tradition.
UCHIZONO GALLERY
Painted on location in San Juan Capistrano for the 2005 LPAPA Invitational exhibit.  Available now, at Uchizono Gallery.  See the link above for information about Saim Caglayan as well as my online gallery.

Paintings By LPAPA Signature Member Cynthia Britain

UCHIZONO GALLERY
Cynthia Britain is one of five signature members who co-founded the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association in 1996.
Whether she's painting vistas in Crystal Cove, California's wine country or France's bucolic villages, Britain works with  a quick brush stroke, using slow-drying oils.  On finely textured linen canvases, she focuses on recording the quality of light with precision a camera can't catch before a scene shifts.   Cynthia's intent is to document atmospheric mood.

UCHIZONO GALLERY
I am pleased to offer works by LPAPA signature member, Cynthia Britain.  I have collected her paintings for years and I am offering a selection for sale at Uchizono Gallery.

The Artist's Eye

Uchizono Gallery is my online store and  I have been collecting for forty five years.  My artist's eye has been my guide.

Being a painter,I have often wondered what the connection is between the technique of oil painting and fine old Native American jewelry.   As an impressionist, the good bones of drawing need to be present but the trick is to "let go of the drawing" providing suggestions rather than perfection and giving movement by losing the hard lines.

If you take a look at a Navajo or Zuni bracelets made in the early 1900's, you can see perfect symmetry was not a requirement.   Of course there were masters with impeccable skills that can't help  themselves with their fine precision stamp work but even their work is not machine made and has to be slightly off.  There is an identifying feel to an old bracelet giving it soul.  Inspired by nature.  Giving the piece movement with untreated turquoise celebrating being worn in a rainbow of blues and greens.

Without a makers mark, which is the rule with early Native American silversmith artisans, how does one know the jewelry is authentic?  The construction and style can date the bracelet (or concho belt or  pin or necklace) but still modern production with the same materials and technique can produce an identical piece.  I have read the books about Millicent Rogers and  Lauris Phillips (her Peshlakai collection was donated to the Wheelwright museum.)  I have come to the conclusion these women were really good shoppers.  Lauris Phillips had signed pieces from Navajo silversmith Fred Peshlakai but the bulk of the collection is unsigned.  She is identifying these unsigned pieces  with  faith and observation.  Unless you are John Bonner Strong, who was a devoted friend of Fred Peshlakai and collected jewelry directly, providence is not something that can be guaranteed.
UCHIZONO GALLERY

Really, the only way to purchase vintage and Native American jewelry is to trust your instincts, look at reference books to educate yourself and have faith in the dealer you are purchasing from.  Of course there are obvious red flags, when something is described as being "old style" or the turquoise is block (which is pressed together resin and easily identifiable).     You can certainly look with a loop for wear marks but what if the piece was never worn and was left in a box for fifty years?

The tricky part is providence.
